Shadow tanker intercepted in Gulf of Oman

Mon Jul 27 12:22:01 CEST 2026 Timsen

On July 16, 2026, the USS 'Boxer' Amphibious Ready Group intercepted and boarded the shadow fleet tanker 'Wen Yao' in the Gulf of Oman. U.S. Marines from the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit used helicopters to access the deck of the tanker. The operation was a flag verification boarding. The 'Wen Yao' was falsely flagged in San Marino. Though the tanker's most recent name is Chinese, it is owned and operated in Dubai. The 'Wen Yao' was fully laden with a cargo of Iranian fuel oil, and the crew took several curious steps while under pursuit by U.S. forces. The vessel changed name and flag repeatedly on July 16, while in pursuit. She changed her name from 'Lan Jing' to 'Azhin' at 02:36 a.m. UTC and then her flag from Curacao to Iran at 03:30 a.m. Photo and video: https://x.com/CENTCOM/status/2077866609138393167/video/1 https://x.com/TankerTrackers/status/2077889092407431436

Sanctioned tanker transited Strait of Hormuz

Fri Mar 13 18:35:36 CET 2026 Timsen

The latest crossings of the Strait of Hormuz included the 'Skywave' and the 'Wen Yao' on March 13, 2026. The 'Wen Yao' appeared to have been the first sanctioned vessel to have transited the Strait without turning off its AIS, while still deep within the Gulf, diverging from the typical concealment practices often associated with shadow fleet activities.
