Poole-Cherbourg service ended three weeks earlier than planned
Brittany Ferries announced to discontinue its direct Poole-Cherbourg service three weeks earlier than planned. The 'Barfleur', which has served the route since 1992, was reassigned to cover the Rosslare-Cherbourg route, starting on Oct 12, 2026, and made its final sailing from Poole on this day. At the end of June, Brittany Ferries had announced a series of measures to achieve savings of several million euros. Among them, the sale of the 'Cotentin', but also of the 'Barfleur', and the closure of the Cherbourg-Poole link on Nove 2, replaced by a route passing through Portsmouth, Guernsey and Cherbourg. Barfleur to be retired
The 'Barfleur' which, at 34 years of age, is the oldest vessel in the fleet of Brittany Ferries, is to be withdrawn from service and listed for sale before the end of 2026. The Poole-Cherbourg route, which opened to tourist traffic 40 years ago, is to permanently close. Although the company charters in the 33 year old 'Norbay', it is opting to sell the 19 year old 'Cotentin'. The Portsmouth-Le Havre route, which was originally opened in the early 1980s by Townsend Thoresen, will also end later this year.
Two injured in car collision with ramp
Two passengers of the "Barfleur" were taken to hospital after their car collided with a railing on the ship to shore ramp after the ferry docked at Poole in the evening of July 31, 2019, following its crossing from Cherbourg. Neither casualty was seriously injured, but they were treated for shock, cuts and bruises by ferry staff then paramedics. An ambulance was called whilst the crew administered first aid to the car’s driver and passenger. Both had minor cuts and bruises. Both passengers were taken to Poole General Hospital.
