Foremast on Sailwise yacht snapped
The foremast of the ''Beatrix' snapped off on the IJsselmeer on Aug 29, 2026. No one was injured in the incident, though everyone was badly shaken. There were thunderstorms, and given the crew —a mix of people with and without disabilities—it was decided not to sail at night. The weather improved the following day, and the group set out after all. Things went well until the foremast suddenly snapped. The crew was on the foredeck at the time. Everyone was then moved to the aft of the ship. Although the situation was brought under control, the KNRM was called in. "The crew with disabled was more vulnerable than people who can walk. It was decided to ask the KNRM to take everyone off the yacht. The crew went to Medemblik. The standing rigging—the cables that keep the mast upright—was in perfect condition. It appeared there was a weak spot in the mast itself. The ship has since been declared stable enough to sail back across the IJsselmeer to its home port of Elahuizen. It was a custom-made aluminum mast. The insurance company was involved, but in parallel a fundraiser was started. The 'Beatrix' belongs to SailWise, a water sports organisation for people with disabilities.
