Filipino crew members repatriated - ship sank

Tue Oct 27 12:54:22 CET 2026 Timsen

Four days after two blasts struck the 'Cape Dao' in the engine room and on the C-deck, enroute from Mina Saqr to India, about 4.6 kilometers off Musandam in the Gulf of Oman, the five Filipinos among its 28 crew members were back in the Philippines on Sep 27. They landed at Terminal 3 of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport on Qatar Airways Flight QR928 on the evening. The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), and the Manila International Airport Authority’s medical team handled their processing at the terminal, where the crew members received medical checks, welfare support, and special financial assistance. OWWA regional welfare offices continued to assist the five in their home communities and link them to welfare and reintegration programs based on their needs and eligibility. Their licensed manning agency arranged medical examinations, temporary lodging, and onward travel for the crew members before they headed back to their families. The UK Maritime Trade Operations center had reported the ship burning and adrift after all crew members had been evacuated, and initially listed two casualties. The only confirmed death was an Indian national. The Forward Seamen’s Union of India identified him as Suraj Yadav, a wiper from Deoria in Uttar Pradesh. Meanwhile the ship was abandoned and adrift, much down by the stern and with burnt out superstructure. It sank on Oct 14 after an unsuccessful salvage attempt, being the second cargo ship to go down in the Strait of Hormuz on this day, besides the container m/v 'GFS Pride' and the third vessel to have sunk since the US-Iran war began on Feb 28, according to an analysis of IMO casualty data. The vessel has been declared a total loss. Report with photo: https://theglobalfilipinomagazine.com/five-filipino-crew-members-of-bulk-carrier-attacked-off-oman-arrive-home/

Captain died in attack

Fri Sep 25 11:05:18 CEST 2026 Timsen

On Sep 23, 2026, at 6.30 a.m., the 'Cape Dao' was struck by an unknown projectile, while transiting the area near the Strait of Hormuz, approximately 2.5 nautical miles off the coast of the Musandam Governorate, causing a fire in the engine room. The incident resulted in the death of one crew member, while the Royal Navy of Oman evacuated 27 crew members and provided them with medical care. A NAVAREA warning reported the ship was currently on fire and drifting in pos. 26-24.60 N 056-25.10 E, approx 2.5 nautical miles northeast of Ras Makhbuq. Suraj Yadav, a 23-year-old seafarer from Uttar Pradesh's Deoria district, was killed in the attack. He was a resident of Karmanjipur Ahirwati Tola village under the Gauri Bazar police station and had travelled to Oman on Aug 19 through a Mumbai-based company to work aboard a commercial vessel. The Indian Embassy in Oman announced that that there were 19 Indian nationals among the crew and confirmed its coordination with Omani authorities regarding the crew's safety.
