Bulk carrier refloated after six days

Thu Sep 24 22:02:59 CEST 2026 Timsen

The 'Cape Falcon' has been refloated on a high tide on Sep 24 with assistance from a fleet of Boluda Towage Australia tugs after six days aground around six nautical miles outside of the Port of Gladstone. The accident had happened, as it was heading to an anchorage point for bunkering. Previous attempts to refloat the vessel had failed due to the rigidity of its grounding in the seabed. A fleet of Boluda tugboats supported the salvage by moving the ship sideways to ease it from the seabed, before a high tide enabled crews to tow it off the shelf and to a safe anchorage in pos. 23° 50' N 151° 31' E. Following its salvage, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority has detained the bulk carrier for a seaworthiness inspection before it may leave the country. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau has started an investigation into the grounding using information from the ship’s voyage data recorder and from weather and sea reports from the time of the grounding.

Bulk carrier aground off Gladstone

Tue Sep 22 16:02:11 CEST 2026 Timsen

The 'Ocean Falcon' ran aground en route from Haystone in pos. 23° 52' S 151° 30' E, while it was attempting to anchor on the afternoon of Sep 18, 2026, six nautical miles east of the Port of Gladstone in Central Queensland. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has launched an investigation, while no injuries, hull breaches or pollution were reported. Investigators were to attende the ship to conduct interviews and collect evidence, once appropriate. In the meantime, data from the ship's VDR were to be preserved, and the investigators collected other relevant recorded information, including ship tracking data, weather information, and crew, operator and maintenance records. The AMSA detained the vessel. Maritime Safety Queensland was continuing to respond after initial refloating attempts had failed twice, one involving six and another involving ten tugs. Both failed to move the vessel, and further salvage advice was is sought on options to safely move it from its current position. The bulk carrier was not blocking the shipping channel, but port operations have been impacted, while the recovery efforts continued with the ship remaining stuck as of Sep 22.
