Anilin leaked from tanker in Brunsbüttel
On Jan 22, 2026, at around 2 p.m., the toxic substance aniline leaked from the 'Capewater' into the water of the port of Brunsbüttel. At approximately 1:10 p.m., the cargo master and crew noticed the aniline leakage during the unloading of the tanker. They immediately stopped the process using the emergency shut-off devices both on land and on board. The Brunsbüttel fire department and the Covestro company's fire brigade took over hazard control and conducted measurements. The measurements showed no abnormalities. Initial estimates indicated that approximately 400 to 800 liters had leaked. Whether the substance entered the harbor basin could not be ruled out. The crew carried out further cleaning on board. A possible cause was a technical defect in a pressure relief valve. The German Social Accident Insurance Institution for the Transport Sector (BG Verkehr) has ordered a ban on continuing the uloaindg operation until the cause of the leakage was determined. The Brunsbüttel Water Police launched an investigation. The ship had arrived in Brunsbüttel enroute from Antwerp short past 6 a.m. On Jan 25 the tanker left Brunsbüttel agauin enroute to Teesport with an ETA as of Jan 26.
