Suspected suicide after crew member was found dead in cabin

Wed Jul 22 11:55:46 CEST 2026 Timsen

A female crew member was found dead aboard the 'Celebrity Constellation', after the vessel arrived at La Spezia on the morning of July 19, 2026. The deceased was a 33-year-old stewardess from Mauritius. She was discovered in her cabin by her partner, who was also employed on board. The alarm was immediately raised, and the ship's medical team attended the scene, where the woman was pronounced dead. Once the vessel had completed berthing operations, officers from the La Spezia police, forensic specialists, and representatives of the local prosecutor's office boarded the ship to examine the scene. Prosecutor Giacomo Gustavino interviewed the woman's partner as part of the ongoing inquiry. Investigators were reviewing the sequence of events, including footage from the ship's security camera system, while the authorities have indicated that an autopsy may be ordered as the investigation progresses. The investigators were treating the case as a suspected suicide, although the exact cause of death has not yet been officially confirmed. The body was transferred to the mortuary at Sant'Andrea Hospital in La Spezia, where it remained at the disposal of the judicial authorities. Italian officials wer also coordinating with the Mauritian consulate to notify the woman's family and provide the necessary consular assistance. At the time of the incident, the 'Celebrity Constellation' was operating a 10-day Mediterranean itinerary from Ravenna to Civitavecchia/Rome, scheduled to conclude on July 20.

Norovirus outbreak during cruise

Sun Jan 14 14:49:30 CET 2024 Timsen

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed an outbreak of norovirus aboard the 'Celebrity Constellation' during its recent nine-night roundtrip which set off from Tampa on Jan 3, 2024, and returned on Jan 12 after calling at New Orleans, Cozumel, Belize, and Costa Maya. The vessel had 2,056 passengers on board, with 68 reporting symptoms of vomiting and diarrhoea, exceeding the 2 % threshold requiring reporting to the CDC?s Vessel Sanitation Program. Additionally, seven out of 948 crew members reported similar symptoms. The outbreak was confirmed as norovirus through testing. Immediate sanitation measures were implemented, including enhanced cleaning, and isolating affected individuals. As the vessel underwent a turnaround on Jan 12, debarking guests from one sailing and embarking guests for the next cruise, a full deep clean was likely conducted, with minimal impact expected on the next cruise. The next itinerary is a 12-night sailing, visiting Grand Cayman, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, and Cozumel before returning to Tampa on Jan 24.
