25 passengers evacuated from burning MBTA ferry

Thu Jun 18 10:08:02 CEST 2026 Timsen

On June 15, 2026, at around 2.30 p.m. a fire broke out in the engine room of the 'Champion', operating on the route Hingham-Hull and prompted the evacuation of 25 passengers onto a South Boston island. The ferry was running the 2 p.m. trip from Hingham to Long Wharf when the fire was discovered off Castle Island. The flames were extinguished as quickly as possible. 25passengers were evacuated onto Castle Island, where an MBTA bus picked them up and brought them to the Aquarium/Long Wharf station. The ferry was assisted to the quay by the responding fire boats. An investigation of the incident found that an overheated bearing had most likely sparked the fire. The extent of damage has not been disclosed. The investigation was ongoing. In collaboration with the US Coast Guard, the final investigation, reviews, and any corrective action plans were still taking place and being developed by the MBTA.
