Fire off Heligoland

Thu Nov 05 18:57:13 CET 2026 Timsen

On Nov 4, 2026, at 11.40 p.m. the DGzRS station German Bight/Heligoland, along with the Heligoland Volunteer Fire Department, responded to a fire aboard the 'Christine'. Upon returning to the island’s harbour following a fishing trip, the three fishermen discovered smoke emanating from the engine room. They contacted the MRCC in Bremen to report that a fire had broken out in the engine room of their vessel. The fishermen had already managed to seal the compartment and activate the ship’s onboard CO2 fire-extinguishing system. The MRCC alerted the lifeboat 'Hermann Marwede', which was stationed nearby. The rescue crew deployed the daughter boat 'Verena' and pulled alongside the distressed vessel. Upon initial inspection, the rescuers found no visible flames, though the sealed bulkhead of the engine room was warm to the touch. The volunteer fire department arrived on the scene with several fire engines and a command vehicle. A firefighting team equipped with breathing apparatus opened the bulkhead. However, active firefighting was no longer required, as the initial measures taken by the fishermen had already successfully extinguished the blaze. The firefighters subsequently deployed a high-performance ventilation fan to clear smoke from the fishing vessel, while the sea rescuers used the floodlights aboard the Hermann Marwede' to illuminate the scene throughout the operation. No one was injured during the incident. Afterwards, the fire department assisted in arranging overnight accommodation for the fishermen. Grounding on Mellum island

Fri Aug 29 10:07:33 CEST 2025 Timsen

On Aug 28, 2025, at approximately 5:30 a.m., the captain of the ' Christine-FED 4', with three crew members on board, notified the MRCC of the DGzRS in Bremen, that the fishing vessel had run aground a good two nautical miles north of the Mellum bird sanctuary island (Lat. 53.7650 Lng. 8.1483). Because the water was receding while the tide was already beginning to go out, the captain feared that his vessel might capsize at a later date.the MRCC immediately alerted the sea rescuers of the Hooksiel station, and the lifeboat 'BernhardGruben' was mobilized. By the time the sea rescuers arrived on scene, the fishing vessel was high and dry on the sand. Therefore, it was no longer possible to tow it free at that time. As a precaution, the daughter boat ' Johann Fidi' took off two of the three fishermen. captain remained on board. In the following hours, the lifeboat remained on standby to secure the fishing vessel. However, its position remained stable. Around 2 p.m., the tide raised the water level sufficiently to tow the vessel free by the lifeboat. The two previously rescued fishermen returned to their vessel, which sailed under its own power to its home port of Fedderwardersiel. At the time of the accident, there was a light southeasterly to southerly wind of force 3 Beaufort and good visibility.
