Investigation into collision still ongoing one year later
The investigation into the collision of the 'Containerschips Nord' and the 'Beringzee (MMSI: 205508590)', now sailing as 'Mulsanne', on the Western Scheldt between Rilland in South Beveland and Paal in Zeelandic Flanders on May 30, 2026, was still in full swing one year later. This was reported by the Dutch Safety Board. During the incident, one crew member of the taml vessel fell overboard. The captain managed to rescue the sailor. He subsequently brought another seriously injured person to safety from a section of the ship that was rapidly taking on water. Multiple lifeboats, a police vessel, tugboats, Rijkswaterstaat, a helicopter, and a Coast Guard aircraft were deployed to assist. An ambulance was also dispatched to the scene. A nurse from the helicopter provided medical care to one of the injured. The 'Containerships Nord' proceeded to Flushing for emergency repairs. The cargo of the inland tanker was transferred to another ship, before it could be salvaged. After repairs it returned to service as the 'Mulsanne', operasted by the Unitum Barging Group in Ahn. In an interim statement, the Safety Board indicated that the investigation focused, among other things, on navigation, positioning, and communication in a busy and complex traffic area. The organisation and guidance of shipping on the Western Scheldt was also being investigated. Furthermore, an examination was being conducted into possible measures to manage collision risks and the factors that contributed to the collision occurring despite existing measures. The collection and analysis of factual information has been completed. The report was now being prepared for the review phase. The final report of the investigation was expected to be published at the end of the year, according to the Investigation Council. Container ship at repair yard
New photos of the interior of the 'Beringzee' reveal the extent of the damage after the collision with the 'Containerships Nord': The wheelhouse and the cabin of the ship were completely flooded. The cabin was also completely damaged by the impact, along with significant damage to the stern on the starboard side and significant hull damage. Only the quick response of the inland vessels 'Kevalia' and 'Verity', which were the first on the scene and sandwiched the casualty, kept the badly damaged tanker afloat, before tugs took over later. The tanker 'Bach' also arrived in the evening to pump the biodiesel from the 'Beringzee', which was brought to Terneuzen by tugs on May 31, accompanied by a Coastguard helicopter. Nothing is yet officially known about the circumstances of the collision. The question of which ship had priority or was at fault is the subject of the ongoing investigation. The 'Containerships Nord' was docked at the Damen Shipyard in Dunkirk on June 2.
