Tanker damaged by unknown projectile

Wed Jul 08 18:37:39 CEST 2026 Timsen

The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that its forces carried out a series of strikes against Iran on July 7, in response to Iran’s attacks on the three crude oil tankers 'Al Rekayyat', 'Wedyan', and the 'Cyprus Prosperity' on July 7 at 1.05 p.m. All tankers were attacked while transiting the Strait of Hormuz by unknown projectiles. While the 'Al Rekayyat' suffered an engine room fire after being hit on its port side, the other two sustained structural damage. No casualties or pollution were reported, and the affected vessels were able to continue to designated ports or anchorages. In retaliation, the US CENTCOM launched strikes over more than 80 Iranian military targets, including air defence systems, command and control facilities, coastal radar sites and anti-ship missile capabilities. The operation also targeted more than 60 Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) fast attack boats operating in and around the Strait of Hormuz. The CENTCOM had described the attack on vessels as a breach of the ceasefire agreement that threatened freedom of navigation through Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. forces remained prepared to respond to further threats and protect international maritime commerce in the region.
