Skipper found drunken after barge was in danger of running aground
The police arrested the skipper of the 'Danny' on the afternoon of Dec 13, 2025, on the Western Scheldt, who was heavily under the influence of alcohol. Thanks to quick action by Rijkswaterstaat, the vessel was prevented from running aground. Rijkswaterstaat employees boarded the ship, which had come from Antwerp, on the afternoon after observing unusual boating behaviour. By dropping anchor, they prevented it from running aground at a dike. Because it was suspected that the skipper was under the influence, the police was called in. When the police officers boarded the vessel, the skipper was unresponsive. He was arrested and taken to the police station for a breathalyzer test, which showed an alcohol content of 1220 ug/l, more than five times the legal limit. The vessel was towed to the port of Hansweert at the skipper's expense. On the late afternoon of Dec 14, police officers boarded the barge again. The skipper was preparing to depart. After a breathalyzer test, he was again found to be under the influence of alcohol.
