Ten crew members refused to sail through Strait of Hormuz
Ten Filipino crew members of the 'Dema M', who refused to sail through the Strait of Hormuz due to safety risks, have returned to the Philippines. They arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 on Sep 4, 2026, following their repatriation from the ship. The seafarers were welcomed by the Department of Migrant Workers, led by Assistant Secretary Venecio V. Legaspi, together with representatives from the DMW and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration. They were given repatriation assistance and support for their safe return home. Legaspi assured the seafarers that the DMW would continue to protect the rights, employment, and benefits of Filipino seafarers, especially in situations where their safety may be at risk. He also recognised their decision to prioritize their lives and security. Under DMW rules and government policy, Filipino seafarers have the right to refuse to sail through routes considered high-risk or warlike areas, including the Strait of Hormuz. The DMW reminded shipowners and licensed manning agencies to respect this right and ensure that the welfare and safety of seafarers were protected.
