Lawyer's battle regarding seized Russian oligarch yacht going on

Tue Sep 08 10:01:46 CEST 2026 Timsen

The Russian oligarch Alisher Usmanov continued to have his lawyers fight for the seized "Dilbar, which was seized in March 2022 at the Blohm + Voss Shipyard in Hamburg, where the vessel was undergoing inspection by workers of the Lürssen Yard. The yacht was subsequently moved under escort into the Floating Dock 10 in Berne, where it has since blocked the dock from being used for new projects. In June, the mining billionaire, who is on the EU sanctions list, secured a victory in the Frankfurt Administrative Court, which ruled that, since 2016, the yacht had belonged to a family trust rather than to him personally. Investigations against the oligarch had been dropped in late 2025 upon the payment of a financial settlement. For its part, Lürssen has been engaged in a legal dispute with the Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control (BAFA) since April 2025, arguing that the yacht should not be classified as a frozen asset under EU sanctions regulations. Following a lower-court ruling favourable to Lürssen, the BAFA has now lodged an appeal with the Higher Administrative Court of Hessen.

Super yacht of sanctioned Russian billionaire Usmanov no longer frozen

Wed Jul 01 11:02:42 CEST 2026 Timsen

The 'Dilbar', which was linked to the family of the Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov, could no longer be considered a "frozen" asset under the EU sanctions regime, a Frankfurt court ruled, allowing the Lürssen Shipyard, servicing the vessel, to demand payment for years of technical maintenance. It was unclear who ultimately stood behind the trust for which the yacht was held, and no conclusion could be drawn that they were subject to sanctions, according to the ruling of the Administrative Court of Frankfurt, issue in June 2026. The authorities have not proven that Usmanov had any influence over the trust, so the vessel could not be considered a frozen economic resource. The superyacht was commissioned by Usmanov and named after his mother. The German shipbuilding company Lürssen built the vessel about ten years ago and has serviced it in recent years, also after the tycoon was sanctioned. The company filed a lawsuit, seeking to prove that it was not subject to sanctions and couild bill the owners of the 'Dilbar' for maintenance. Lürssen filed the lawsuit after Usmanov's sister, Gulbakhor Ismailova, who was once the main beneficiary of the "The Sister Trust" which owns the yacht, was removed from the EU sanctions list in March 2025. The court cited this decision to remove Ismailova from the list in its arguments, adding that the name of the trust itself was also not sufficiently convincing evidence of a connection to Usmanov. The decision may be appealed. According to the court ruling, a subsidiary trust, as well as the company under which the yacht was registered in the Cayman Islands, were on the US sanctions lists, but not on the EU's. After the tycoon and his sister were sanctioned in 2022, the vessel was in the port of Hamburg. Usmanov is under US and EU sanctions. He is the seventh richest Russian with a fortune of $18 billion. Usmanov's press service said the billionaire welcomes the court's decision.
