Two crew members died in tanker fire

Sat Aug 29 21:48:55 CEST 2026 Timsen

A fire broke out on the 'DL Amber', approximately 7.4 kilometers north of Jawoldo, Ongjin-gun, Incheon, on Aug 27, 2026, at 10.38 p.m. resulting in the deaths of two crew members. One man in his 60s and another in his 20s, who were in the engine room, were found in cardiac arrest and transferred to Jinduh Port on Yeongheungdo, but ultimately died. The remaining 16 crew members were rescued by the Coastguard. The fire, initially suspected to have started in the engine room, did not spread to the oil storage area. The vessel was carrying 12,400 tons of bunker C oil. The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries temporarily issued a "caution" level maritime accident crisis alert. Among the 18 crew members on board, 11, including the two deceased, were Korean nationals, while the remaining seven were foreign nationals. The ship had departed Incheon Port on Aug 26 at around 8:40 p.m. en route to Ulsan Port. After the shipping company reported the fire to the Vessel Traffic Service Center, the Coastguard mobilised 24 patrol vessels, one aircraft, and three vessels from related agencies, extinguishing the fire at around 4 a.m., five hours and 22 minutes after the outbreak, preventing it from spreading to the fuel tanks. The shipping company, after inspecting the condition of the vessel with related agencies, planned to move it away with tugs, once safety has been confirmed. The Coastguard investigated the exact cause of the fire and the scale of the damage.
