Offshore ship deregistered by flag state after drug bust

Fri Feb 27 12:28:09 CET 2026 Timsen

The Tanzanian government has swiftly deregistered the 'Eagle' and fined its operators $20,000 after it was intercepted in El Salvador carrying 6.6 tons of narcotics. The ship, initially registered in Zanzibar, had no Tanzanian crew members on board. Authorities acted immediately upon receiving reports of the drug bust. After receiving reports of the vessel’s seizure on Feb 17,, the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar moved swiftly to deregister the ship on Feb 18,. As a result, the vessel no longer held the Zanzibar registration. In addition to canceling its registration, the government has begun efforts to trace the vessel’s owners to establish the source of the incident. The company involved has also been fined 20,000 US Dollars us in accordance with regulations of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Tanzania has launched an intensive investigation to trace the vessel's true ownership. Diplomatic channels through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have been activated to mitigate any diplomatic fallout and reassure the global community of East Africa's commitment to maritime security.
