Tanker threatened to capsize during repairs in Piraeus

Fri Jan 23 09:22:40 CET 2026 Timsen

On Jan 21, 2026, at around noon, the 'Erato' suffered a sudden loss of stability and a heavy list to port side after seawater had entered the ballast compartments during repair works in the shipyard area of Perama.
An opening on the port side hull, combined with rough weather, led to progressive flooding and a sharp heel. The local emergency plan was immediately activated by the Greek Coastguard, with three tugs and a floating crane respondiong to secure the vessel
. The port authorities and the lifeboat ÄAegean Sea' remained on standby
. An anti-pollution boom was laid out around the stern as a precaution. The stability could be restored during the night through controlled ballasting. The opening could thus be raised above the waterline, the internal flooding was contolled and the water was pumped out on Jan 22. On the morning a pollution spreading over approximately 400-500 square metres was observed, consisting of scattered iridescent, self-dissolving petroleum products. Decontamination work was carried out. No injuries were reported. The 4th Port Department of Perama of the Central Port Authority of Piraeus, which was conducting the preliminary investigation, prohibited the departure of the tanker until the presentation of a certificate of continued seaworthiness from the classification society that monitors it.
