Ship sank in Naples

Thu Mar 12 21:35:52 CET 2026 Timsen

The 'Falerno' started taking on water at pier 28 in the port of Naples on March 3, 2026. The ship developed a list to starboard side and finally capsized and sank. The ship had been laid up in the port since 2011. Just a few days ago, the ownership of the ship had passed from a Neapolitan entrepreneur to a company of Moroccan investors, with the intention of returning it to Morocco for a restoration and transformation project. According to the plan, the 'Falerno' was to be towed to North Africa for restoration and conversion into a restaurant and tourist attraction, a symbol of rebirth after years of disuse. The fate of the ship, now interrupted by a sudden failure, raisesd questions about inspections, maintenance, and liability related to vessels long-term in port. The incident also drew attention to the risks associated with the conservation of large, inactive vessels, which can suffer irreversible damage over time if not adequately monitored. The operations to secure the area and the seabed have been ordered by the Port Authority, which was watching for any leaks of materials or fuel from the sunken ship's tanks. The Naples Port Authority andthe Italian Coast Guard continued to monitor the wreck. No details if the vessel would be recovered or just be scrapped in situ. Built in 1965 by the Pellegrino Shipyards of Naples for the Società Partenopea di Navigazione, the 'Falerno' was originally a motor vessel intended for services between Naples and the Gulf islands, capable of carrying up to 300 passengers. For years, the Falerno was SPAN's flagship, serving the route to Capri, Ischia, and Procida and the Pontine and Neapolitan islands. In recent years, the vessel had remained stranded in Naples, after being embroiled in legal proceedings related to financial difficulties. Recently, a North African company had purchased it with the aim of converting it into a floating restaurant, a plan which seemed very much in doubt now.
