Damaged ship towed to Giresun and started to smoke again

Wed Oct 21 21:32:52 CEST 2026 Timsen

Coast Guard teams, dispatched to the area following reports from local fishermen, towed the 'Fortis' to the waters off Giresun Port and anchored it on Oct 11. After it was moored, smoke was detected in the ship's cargo hold, which contained the 3,300 tons of chickpeas. Giresun Port teams carried out cooling operations from the sea with a tug to prevent a potential fire. After the ship's hatch covers were later opened, the cargo was disposed of at Giresun port with 11 trucks, causing a strong odor in the surroundingareas of the city. The ship had been enroute to Mersin, carrying 3,300 tons of chickpeas, which had been loaded at Russia’s Novorossiysk Port, when it was struck by a drone in the Black Sea. The ten crew members on board the damaged vessel were evacuated. Drifting uncontrollably without a crew, the ship was carried by the current as far as the waters off the Keşap district of Giresun.
