Humpback whale left barge off Skagen
The humpback whale, which had grounded off Poel, has been floated into the submersible barge 'Jürgen' on April 28 and was now being transported in the barge – towed by the "Fortuna B" and accompanied by the "Robin Hood." The vessels were sailing at a speed of three to four knots on April 29. The convoy was scheduled to sail around the northern tip of Denmark through the Skagerrak into the North Sea, where the whale will be released. A police boat from the island of Fehmarn will also join the convoy and escort it to Denmark. The whale had been lying off the island of Poel for 29 days and moved into the barge with the help of a private rescue initiative. Volunteers maneuvered the animal into a dredged channel and pulled it to the barge with straps. In the evening, smaller boats pushed the barge with the whale into Wismar Bay, where it was taken in tow by the tug "Robin Hood." Later, near Fehmarn, the "Fortuna B" took over. On the morning of May 1, the convoy, along with the 'Robin Hood' also the 'Arne Tiselius', was 11 miles north of Skagen. On May 2 at around 9 a.m., the whale had finally left the barge 'Jürgen' north of Skagen under unknowncircumstances. The ' Fortuna B' turned back to Wilhelmshaven, where it arrived on May 3 at around midnight. Former Scharhörn to accompany tow with whale
The tug "Robin Hood" has been docked in Wismar harbor since the morning of April 19, 2026. The tug from Stralsund was hired to tow a transport platform for the grounded humpback whale toward the open sea. In Wismar's old harbour, the "Fortuna B" has moored directly in front of the "Robin Hood". The vessel is intended to accompany the tow, including the whale. The journey through the Baltic Sea to the Skagerrak could take approximately 100 hours. At noon, divers were in the water close to the work platform behind the whale, working on the seabed with a hose. They are aligning the tarpaulin and net in front of the whale, which have been in the water since April 18 as part of the transport structure. DLRG boats were providing safety, according to the emergency services in Kirchdorf. Five DLRG boats and a jet ski are stationed in the island's harbour. Approximately 20 DLRG personnel have been deployed around the humpback whale. They will remain on Poel for the DLRG for the duration of the operation. The whale was lying relatively still in the waters of Lake Kirchdorf.
