Gaza support ship allided with pier in Kiel

Sun Aug 16 14:47:21 CEST 2026 Timsen

The 'Fru Sand', which was supposed to make a stopover in Kiel on its way to Gaza on Aug 11, 2026, where it is scheduled to arrive in Gaza in September/October, allided with a pier in the Stickenhörn Port. The cutter was actually supposed to continue its journey on Aug 14, 2026. After the allision, the dock was cordoned off, and the fire department has deployed an oil boom around the ship. According to the crew, this was purely a precautionary measure; the damage to the vessel only affected the engine. Technicians would arrive soon, and they should be able to continue in a few days. The initial assessment was that the damage to the port facilities amounted to at least €30,000. However, there may be more damage underwater. Due to the damage to the jetty, it was currently closed. Furthermore, the ship was also currently unseaworthy, and the police have launched an investigation." The "Handala II," named after the cartoon character Handala, who represents the Palestinian resistance, is officially registered as the "Fru Sand" and is part of the Gaza Freedom Fleet. According to its own statements, its goal is to break the "illegal blockade of Gaza" and deliver aid supplies. Captain Wollnick, who only came aboard for the next leg of the journey after the allision, hoped to able to continue in a few days. However, it was possible the delay could lead to changes in the upcoming legs of the journey, such as the next stop in Bremerhaven. On the afternoon of Aug 15, the ship left Kiel again and returned to Marstal.
