Trawler caught fire and sank off Sète

Fri Mar 13 11:50:54 CET 2026 Timsen

On March 9, 2026, at approximately 12:15 p.m. the CROSS Med, based in La Garde in the Var department, was alerted by the 'Aaron', with three crew members on board, reporting a fire on board approximately 11 nautical miles south of Sète. The CROSS mobilised the lifeboats 'SNS 003-Amiral Leenhardt' from the SNSM station in Sète and 'SNS 211-Terrisse' from the SNSM station in Cap d'Agde as well as a Dragon 34 helicopter from the Civil Security service; Three other fishing vessels were also present in the area. The three men, aged between 30 and 50, put on their life jackets before jumping into the Mediterranean. One was airlifted by the Dragon 34 helicopter and then medevaced to the hospital in Sète in stable condition. The other two were pulled aboard the 'SNS 003-Amiral Leenhardt', which brought them ashore in Sète, where they were cared for by the Hérault Departmental Fire and Rescue Service. The fishermen were suffering from hypothermia, and one of them inhaled smoke. All were treated in the hospital in Sète. In parallel with the rescue operations, the SDIS 34's Ship and Boat Intervention Team (IBNB) was deployed aboard the two SNSM boat to conduct firefighting operations. Despite several hours of firefighting efforts, the vessel sank around 7:00 p.m. The operation had been reinforced by the patrol boat 'P612-Maury' of the Maritime Gendarmerie, tasked with securing the area around the blazing trawler. The state services remained vigilant regarding the occurrence of any potential pollution in the area, although nothing significant has been detected at this stage. Weather conditions in the area were southeast wind at 13 knots, slight sea and good visibility.
