Wreck of sunken fishing vessel lifted to be broken up

Wed Feb 11 21:58:43 CET 2026 Timsen

The abandoned 'Galaico Segundo', that had sunk next to the dock of the 6th alignment of El Musel, opposite the Rendiello Dock near Lastres, on Jan 6, 2026, at 6.30 a.m., has been lifted from the water on Feb 10 by two cranes after being pumped out. The salvage operation had started on Feb 9. The wooden ship arrived on Feb 11 at DDR Vessels, the scrapyard located in the Langreo area, in the first row of El Musel. on a special vehicle. The "Galaico Segundo" had been towed to El Musel by the SAR boat 'Salvamar Rigel' after suffering a leak and issuing a distress call near Lastres on March 2, 2023. The cause was a burst pipe in the engine room. The owner at the time claimed that he couldn't bring the vessel ashore at El Musel because the port's travel lift couldn't raise it. The fishing vessel was also not in a condition to sail to the Ría de Avilés Shipyard. Despite repeated requests from the Port Authority, the ship's owner has failed to take responsibility for the vessel during this time, forcing the Port Authority to intervene to prevent environmental and safety risks. Given the advanced state of disrepair, the fuel and oils on board were removed as a preventative measure. In March 2025, the fishing vessel was sold to another owner from Cape Verde, who later died from a tumor. Months later, the pumping operations that had kept the ship afloat ceased, and the ship finally sank.
