Tug sank after allision
The 'Gale' sank after striking an object in Curtis Creek on the morning of April 8, 2026, in Baltimore. The Baltimore City Fire Department Marine Operations received a Mayday call over VHF and deployed the 'Fire Rescue Boat 1' and 'Marine 1' (acting Fire Rescue Boat 2) to the site. The Emergency Response Division within the MD Dept. of the Environment also responded to the scene to assist in rescue operations. All crew members on board were safely rescued by a civilian vessel, but the tug submerged. The tanks contained 6,000 gallons of diesel fuel and 200 gallons of oil. There was currently no evidence of leakage. As a proactive measure, officials started installing containment booms to protect the waterway. Salvage plans were underway and included bringing in cranes to right the boat and divers to inspect the submerged portions of the vessel.
