German warships arrived in Djibouti
The German mine hunter 'Fulda' (MMSI: 211210380) and the 'Mosel' arrived in Djibouti on June 23. During their transit through the Red Sea, both vessels were escorted by British warships in a sign of excellent cooperation, among them the mine countermeasure ship RFA 'Lyme Bay' IMO: 9240768). In the port of Djibouti, the units received logistical resupply. They will then conduct further operational preparations. In preparation for a potential deployment, the minehunter and the tender have been additionally equipped with autonomous systems, mine clearance divers, and vessel protection teams. A total of approximately 140 sailors were on board the naval vessels. Key prerequisites for German participation in an operation in the Strait of Hormuz remained a sustained cessation of hostilities, a legal basis under international law, and a mandate from the German Bundestag. The goal was to have the Bundestag address such a mandate before the summer recess. Photo and video: https://x.com/GermanEmbassy/status/2070086333754741193 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJoWK9_cJFU
German warships prepositioned for mission in Strait of Hormuz
Two German Navy ships, the 'Fulda' and the 'Mosel', have transited the Suez Canal on June 18 on their way to a potential deployment in the Strait of Hormuz. The minehunter and the supply ship were expected to transit the Red Sea southwards within five to seven days and then stop in the port of Djibouti for further deployment preparations. The German units were being "pre-positioned for a possible mission in the Strait of Hormuz, according to the German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius at a meeting of NATO defense ministers in Brussels as a "proactive, precautionary measure" to ensure that, in the event of a deployment mandate, the ships could "act quickly and, above all, be deployed quickly to the Strait of Hormuz."
Supply ship preparing for mission in Strait of Hormuz
The "Mosel" was ending its current mission in the Aegean Sea and preparing for a possible deployment to the Strait of Hormuz. It left Piraeus on May 1, 2026. The ship will join a NATO mine countermeasures group in the Mediterranean. The minehunter "Fulda," which has already set sail for the Mediterranean, will also join the group. This deployment temporarily suspended Germany's contribution to NATO support in the Aegean Sea, which aimed to combat human trafficking networks. The prerequisites for deployment to the Strait of Hormuz would be a sustained cessation of hostilities, a legal basis under international law, and a mandate from the German parliament.
