Harbor Star Shipping Services Inc. contracted for salvage of grounded bulk carrier
The Harbor Star Shipping Services Inc. has secured a contract to assist in the salvage and refloating operations of the 'Giyas', which had run aground off Palawan on May 9, 2026, laden with 71,130 metric tons of Indonesian coa, getting stuck on a sea mound identified as the Queen of the Sea Bank near Araceli, Palawan. The incident resulted in damage to the vessel’s forward bottom hull and flooding of its port and starboard ballast tanks. No marine pollution was reported, and the vessel remained structurally sound. The HSSSI planned to deploy resources for the temporary patching repairs and cargo discharging operations, before mobilising three tugs for the refloating operations, as well as a landing craft tank, two barges, and oil spill equipment.
