Tanker made u-turn after interception by IRGC

Tue Oct 13 23:12:59 CEST 2026 Timsen

On Oct 13, the 'Sonangol Namibe' made a U-turn after allegedly being intercepted by the IRGC in the Strait of Hormuz. The Suezmax tanker went dark and briefly changed its AIS callsign to 'Gol' after an STS transfer off Fujairah.

Shadow tanker changed hands

Tue Aug 18 10:45:32 CEST 2026 Timsen

The 'Sonangol Namibe', a Sonangol tanker firmly in the shadow-fleet age bracket, has changed hands for just under $50m. The price was in line with the sale of another Korean-built tanker of the same age that changed hands in June, the sanctioned 'Helion', currently located in the Gulf of Finland. Until recently named 'Cosmo Sail', the vessel has changed names and companies between two Chinese entities, Hao Xin Long and the Taihu Shipping, after being acquired from Thenamaris in 2025 for just under $40m.

Tanker breached in explosion

Thu Mar 05 13:35:09 CET 2026 Timsen

The ' Sonangol Namibe', enroute from Singapore to the Khawr Al Zubair LNG Terminal, was breached when being hit by a blast while anchored near Iraq's Khor al Zubair port in pos. 29° 34' N 048° 51' E, about 30 nautical miles southeast of the Kuwaiti coast, on March 5, 2026. The vessel was approached by an unknown small vessel at 01.20 a.m. LT at port side. A short time later a loud bang was heard. A ballast tank was breached and losing its contents. The unloaded ship remained afloat despite the damage at port side. The Bahamas flagged tanker is owned by Angolan state oil company Sonangol, but operated by Stena Bulk as part of the Stena Sonangol Suezmax Pool.
