Ship detained after inspection due to faulty steering system
Following the report by a pilot regarding a faulty steering system on board the 'Gottlieb' on Sep 11, 2026, the ship underwent a port state control inspection in the port of Brake, conducted by an expert from the competent Ship Safety Division of the liability insurance association in Hamburg (BG Verkehr). During the inspection, it was discovered, among other things, that three new auxiliary diesel engines were not listed in the existing ship certificates or the associated technical documentation. Further inspections, carried out in cooperation with officers from the Brake Water Police, revealed evidence that the installed units did not meet the requirements for the mandatory nitrogen oxide emission standard. Due to this environmental violation under the Marine Environmental Conduct Ordinance alone, the competent authority for imposing fines—the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) in Hamburg—set a security deposit totaling 40,000 Euros. This amount was split equally between the captain and the chief engineer, with each liable for 20,000 Euros. Further investigations were conducted by the Brake Water Police as part of the administrative offense proceedings. Additional findings on board included poor sanitary conditions with mold growth in showers and toilets, generally substandard living conditions for the crew, and improper handling of shipboard waste. Overall, the vessel was in very poor condition. The BG Verkehr has issued a sailing ban for the ship, which had arrived enroute from Ceuta on Sep 8. on Sep 15, at around midday, the 'Gottlieb' was shifted to the connecting harbor in Bremerhaven, being towed by tugs.
