Vintage tug sank in storm in Erie
The 1911-vintage Great Lakes tug 'Hawaii' sank at the Donjon Shipbuilding and Repair at the Holland St. in the Presque Isle Bay in Erie, Pennsylvania, during a snowstorm after being battered by high winds and waves. Officials at the Erie Maritime Museum at 150 E. Front St. first noticed the ship was underwater on Dec. 31, 2025, and speculated that it most likely sunk the night before. The tug had foundered at its berth and only a small portion was still visible above water. There was no one on board the 'Hawaii' at the time of the incident. Pollution booms were placed around the wreck and dewatering pumps were deployed to refloat the tug, which was barely visible above the surface. The 'Hawaii' is the former 'Indiana', renamed in 2011 to free up the name for a new tug. and had been deployed on Lake Erie for ice breaking. To date, it has not been determined why the ship sank, and the situation on site remained unchanged.
