Allision in Durban

Sat Sep 05 19:48:04 CEST 2026 Timsen

On Sep 1, 2026, at 9.30 p.m. the 'Hawk S', enroute from the Ust-Luga Anchorage west-southwest of St Petersburg, Russia, allided with a quay in the Durban upon entering the port enrote from Vistino. The full extent of the damage to the vessel, which had its bow crushed and breached above and underneath the waterline, when it slammed into the quay with some speed, and the affected port infrastructure was yet unclear, but significant. Emergency response and operational teams were deployed immediately after the incident. The vessel was subsequently moved to the berth MW 11 of the Grindrod Maydon Wharf Container Terminal for damage surveys, where it remained stationary as of Sep 5. The Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) launched an investigation, working with the relevant regulatory authorities and stakeholders to establish the circumstances of the incident. A possible engine or steerage problem may have contributed to the incident.
