Ship holed by ice flow
On Jan12, 2026, at approximately 8:15 p.m., the 'Inceptum' suffered water ingress on the Mittelland Canal at kilometer 297.9 (near Bülstringen). While the captain of the ship was mooring at a berth, he heard an alarm from the engine room, indicating a water ingress. An automatic system on board pumped the water out. The captain then called emergency services, and firefighters from Bülstringen and Haldensleben immediately responded to the scene. They located a leak beneath the waterline, which they were able to temporarily seal. The water police was subsequently alerted and went to the scene to investigate the accident. According to the current investigation, the leak likely occurred when the ship contacted an ice floe. In addition to the fire department and water police, a representative from the Börde district environmental agency and the waterways and shipping authority were deployed. Since it could not be ruled out that, besides the water that entered the vessel, fuel and other operating fluids were also released, an investigation into suspected water pollution has been initiated. Further measures were planned for January 13. The ship left the port of Haldensleben on Jan 19, destined to Magdeburg.
