Bulk carrier set sail after running aground without paying bills

Wed Nov 12 12:03:18 CET 2025 Timsen

The 'Jacob H', while loading a cargo of 52.000 tons of manganese in Gabon, ran aground and required the intervention of a private pilotage company, a company that provides ship guidance services to ensure safe and efficient maneuvers. After the company's pilot successfully refloated the vessel, a bill was allegedly presented to the captain of the 'Jacob H' for payment. The ship's manager considered the bill, which reached one billion, exorbitant. The captain made the irregular decision to leave the port without paying for the towing service. The ship left Gabon on the night of Nov 6, 2025, in violation of international navigation rules, which requirde a ship to wait for the port of call to assign a pilot to guide it out of the port area. The cargo, however, was properly declared and had the necessary permits, and the ship had fulfilled all customs formalities. Judicial investigations have been opened to determine the exact circumstances of the act and to look for any possible accomplices.

Collision most likely caused by oil switch

Wed Jun 22 11:01:40 CEST 2016 Timsen

Union officials have cited fuel issues as a likely cause of the 2015 collision of the "Conti Peridot" with the "Carla Maersk", leading to a chemical spill in the Houston Ship Channel. The National Transportation Safety Board, in a report this month about the March 2015 accident, had urged Houston officials to emphasize better communication and bridge management. Officials also cited heavy fog when the Conti Peridot struck the chemical tanker "Carla Maersk". Union officials responded by saying the accident was most likely caused by a switch to ultralow-sulphur fuel oil, leading the "Conti Peridot" to unexpectedly lose power seconds before the accident.
