Freighter grounded after water ingress

Sun Sep 20 18:32:00 CEST 2026 Timsen

On Sep 17, 2026, the 'Jacuar' was run aground following water ingress in the engine room, but announced that all 18 crew members were safely rescued by the Navy. The vessel—part of the fleet of Mersin-based Brothers Maritime and operated by Sonar Shipping, also based in Mersin—was en route from the port of Nacala in Mozambique to the port of Adabiye in Egypt. when the incident occurred. Carrying a cargo of 7,007.73 tonnes, the ship was manned by a crew comprising ofIndian, Syrian, and Egyptian nationals. They attempted to repair a crack in one of the cargo holds with the assistance of a diver. They managed to temporarily halt the water ingress; however, hours later, the crack widened, the rate of water intake increased, and controlling the situation became impossible. The captain notified the owner and urgently contacted the Port of Mogadishu to request assistance. However, the vessel was denied entry to the port due to safety concerns regarding the port itself. Following coordination, the captain decided to beach the vessel in a safe area to safeguard the crew, the ship, and the cargo. The beaching took place around 12:30 a.m. The following morning, the Coast Guard farrived to check on the crew and initiate evacuation procedures. Most crew members were evacuated, while the captain, chief engineer, chief officer, an electrician, and a welder remained on board to oversee safety and legal procedures. They remained on the vessel to this day. The ministry announced that salvage operations had been initiated. The last position was 02° 07' N 045° 31' E. Prior to its last voyage, the vessel had called at several ports in the region, including Al Adabiyah Jeddah and Djibouti. The ship has a troubled past, showing years of deficiencies in port state inspections. The vessel was detained in Jordan in Sep 2024 and again in April 2025. Egyptian port-state-control authorities recorded deficiencies during an inspection in Dec 2025, including problems relating to deck corrosion and engine-room gauges.
