Two men evacuated from tanker due to carbon monoxide poisoning
Two people were medevaced from the 'Katsuyama' on Jan 13, 2025, around 5:30 a.m. with carbon monoxide poisoning. The tanker was moored in Rotterdam's Waalhaven; when the emergency services were called after the two men became unwell and fell from a height into the hold. Both were able to leave the ship independently and were conscious when they were taken to the hospital by ambulance. The tanker was carrying coconut and palm oil. It was unknown whether the two were crew members or external personnel working on the vessel. A trauma team arrived on the scene. The fire department brought a special high-altitude rescue team in case victims needed to be lifted from the hold. This proved to be unnecessary. The entire ship was inspected for toxic substances by the fire department. They found an elevated concentration of CO in the hold. A search was simultaneously conducted on board to ensure all crew members were present and that no one was missing or had become unwell. The crew was investigating the cause of the carbon monoxide and would take further measures. The fire department was stood down. The ship had departed from Pasir Gudang on Dec 10 and arrived via the Suez Canal in Rotterdam on Jan 12, where it remained stationary as of Jan 14.
