Corvette to sink capsized ship
The Bulgarian Navy has sent the corvette 'Reshitelny' to the waters off Cape Shabla to sink the wreck of the 'Khoryv'. The vessel had been drifting southward without a crew or lights inside Bulgaria’s Exclusive Economic Zone, posing a serious hazard to other ships navigating the area. The worsening weather was complicating efforts to sink the ship, which has proven to have a very robust structure. The stern of the vessel has sunk as of Oct 29 and was now resting on the seabed at a water depth of about 70 metres in the area between Tyulenovo and Cape Shabla, with the bow still visible in inverted position. A strong wind was blowing in the area, and the waves had a height of 4–5 metres, so that the efforts of the navy had to be suspended for the time being. The Bulgarian authorities have announced that they would continue the controlled sinking operation as soon as weather conditions allowed it. The 'Reshitelni' withdrew to the area of Cape Kaliakra, where it remained until better weather conditions. On Oct 23 at around 10 a.m. on October 23, the crew had reported an explosion, caused by an unmanned aerial vehicle near the Romanian port of Constanța. The strike caused the vessel to develop a severe list before capsizing. According to Romania’s Hydrographic Office navigational warning ARN 158/2026 dated 27 October 2026, the vessel remained afloat and other ships in the area were advised to keep at least one nautical mile distance and maintain continuous lookout. On Nov 1, the bow of the tanker was still protruding above the water surface. Capsized tanker drifting into Bulgaria's EEZ
The capsized 'Horiv' was drifting with wind and currents towards Bulgarian waters. The navy and the transport ministry were tracking its movement in real time, and the Bulgarian institutions would act if needed, according to defence minister Dimitar Stoyanov. He said the ship was already in Bulgaria's economic zone. It has been confirmed that the ship posed a potential danger to shipping. Regular notices to mariners were planned to be issued to warn vessels in the area of the possible navigational hazard. A Navy ship was to be sent to inspect the vessel. The aim was to obtain up-to-date information on the condition and location of the tanker. Bulgarian authorities began preparing for a possible intervention on Oct 27, when the ship was about five to six nautical miles from the boundary between the Bulgarian and Romanian EEZs. Forecasts of stronger northerly and northeasterly winds in the coming days have added to concerns about the vessel’s movement. While no environmental incident has been confirmed, and it remained unclear what the vessel was carrying when it was attacked. The military prosecutor's office was still investigating who launched the drones that hit ships in the EEZ. The 'Khoryv' had caught fire after an attack on Oct 23. There were 13 people on board, including 10 Ukrainian and three Azerbaijani citizens. Nine sailors were rescued, one was killed and three remained missing. Other ships attacked during the recent days included the 'Alfa Watan', 'Able', 'Chelsea 3' and 'HS Dignity'. The 'Alfa Watan' and 'Able' were struck inside Bulgaria’s EEZ on Oct 6, 2026, at around 3 a.m.
One dead and three missing after drone attack on ship off Constanța
The 'Khoryv', enroute from Ereğli to Sulina, carrying ferrous materials, was attacked by drones and set on fire on Oct 23, 2026, at around 10 a.m. around 13 nautical miles from Constanța, outside Romania's territorial waters, but close to their boundary, in the Black Sea. The vessel sent an emergency call reading "Mayday/Drone attack". The vessel capsized and started sinking, bottom up, following the impact, with life rafts drifting nearby in pos. 44°06.35' N, 029°00.45' E. The MRCC of the Romanian Naval Authority responded immediately and deployed the SAR 'Artemis' of ARSVOM to the scene. The rescue ship departed from the quay, from berth 78 of the Port of Constanta, towards the area indicated by the MRCC. The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MAI) set off on a mission to rescue the sailors. Due to unfavourable weather conditions with torrential rain and low visibility, an intervention by a Black Hawk helicopter was not possible. The ship had 13 crew members on board, among them ten Ukrainian nationals and three Azerbaijani citizens. Nine of them were rescued by a the offshore supply ship 'Sartor' (IMO: 9087312), which was by chance sailing nearby. They were subsequently transferred to a Romanian Coast Guard vessel. Three more were missing. The body of the deceased was recovered by a Romanian Border Police patrol boat. The death of one Ukrainian seafarer was confirmed by Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while four Ukrainians, including the captain, were undergoing treatment in the hospital. A large scale SAR operation was continued to find the remaining sailors. Chances to find more survivors were regarded as slim amid poor weather and a water temperature of around 17° C. As of Oct 24, no trace of the missing was found. A Black Hawk helicopter of the General Aviation Inspectorate took off from Constanța and was carrying out a search mission in the Black Sea to find the three sailors. The search efforts were suspended later that day due to reduced visibility. The attack came shortly after a meeting of Romania’s Supreme Council of National Defence, which discussed threats linked to developments in the Black Sea and raised questions about stronger protection for commercial shipping and the need for anti-drone systems. The Romanian President Nicușor Dan stated that the attack constituted part of the Russian escalation in the region. Romania's prime minister Luca Niculescu denounced the incident as a flagrant violation of international law and said it was a result of Russian escalation: "We will continue our efforts with our allies, as well as our coordination with Bulgaria and Turkey, to ensure freedom of navigation and maritime security. Our country is set to receive additional equipment, following initiatives taken by Romania within the NATO alliance." Meanwhile, the emergency response deployment at Constanța Port has been reinforced and now comprised four SMURD ambulances, a mobile intensive care unit, two specialist vehicles for transporting personnel and multiple casualties, and an advanced medical post.
