Wreck of ferry to be removed as soon as possible

Fri Oct 23 12:24:57 CEST 2026 Timsen

The plan to refloat and salvage the wreck of the KMP 'Batumandi' was being coordinated between the Directorate General of Sea Transportation and the PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry. It was currently unknown which salvage company could carry out the task. The cost of the salvage service to remove the wreck, which was expected to cost tens of billions of rupiah, would be fully borne by the shipowner, who is covered by insurance. According to Article 203 of Law No. 66 of 2024, the third amendment to Law No. 17 of 2008 concerning Shipping, the costs for the removal of sunken shipwrecks are the sole responsibility of the shipowner. The shipdiscussions also included the appointment of a salvage service provider. These preparations were made to ensure the salvage process could be carried out promptly, taking into account safety and security aspects, as well as the condition of the waters surrounding the incident. The wreck was situated in a busy shipping lane; therefore, it must be salvaged and removed immediately due to its significant disruption to shipping activities. A safety line consisting of buoys and oil booms has been installed at the sinking site.

Burnt out ferry capsized and sank

Thu Oct 22 12:52:12 CEST 2026 Timsen

The burnt out 'Batumandi' started to list to port side, still emitting smoke, on Oct 21, while the stern was sinking further, until it finally capsized at 8.54 p.m. WIB and floated bottom up in the Sunda Strait near the ASDP Merak Port in Cilegon City, Banten Province, in pos. 5° 56' 620" S 105° 59' 548" E. The police patrol boat 'KP. XXIII-2013' was securing the area. The investigative team had not yet had time to conduct a crime scene investigation (TKP) before the capsize. The ferry company ASDP was coordinating with relevant authorities to ensure that the location of the sunken vessel did not compromise the safety or flow of maritime traffic. Safety measures included the installation of a buoy to mark the vessel's location, serving as a guide for passing ships and minimizing potential risks in the area. An oil boom was laid out around the wreck by the PT Pertamina Trans Kontinental (PTK). Since the afternoon of Oct 20, the team had remained on standby near the location with maritime Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE) equipment, which included 11 permanent oil booms totaling 265 meters, four sea booms, Oil Spill Response personnel, and one tug with crew and other support personnel. Furthermore, the ASDP coordinated with the competent authorities and relevant parties to prepare for the recovery of the vessel through a salvage operation, ensuring that the operation is conducted in a planned manner and in accordance with established procedures. A salvage team scheduled to arrive in Merak on Oct 22 at around 10.00 a.m. to assess the position and condition of the 'Batumandi' in order to determine further action. Meanwhile the Banten Regional Police have interrogated passengers and the captain of the ferry during its investigations into the incident. As of Oct 22, police have questioned 18 witnesses to uncover the cause of the fire. 16 people still in hospital care - wreck being cooled

Wed Oct 21 12:39:25 CEST 2026 Timsen

16 persons out of a total of 420 passengers and 40 crew members of the 'Batumandi', who were safely evacuated on Oct 20, were still receiving treatment at Krakatau Medika Hospital in Cilegon on Oct 21. 11 were treated at the Pulomerak Health Center and the other five at the Krakatau Medika Hospital. Based on the ship's manifest, the ferry had carried 393 passengers in vehicles and 27 foot passengers. The ship also transported 89 vehicles. The National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) and the authorities launched an investigation into the cause of the fire, while the main concern at this time was to ensure that all passengers received the necessary treatment after being evacuated. The company ASDP was helping passengers return home after the evacuation process and was working to restore the smooth operation of crossings at the Merak Port. The fire was finally extinguished at 9:02 p.m. Eight vessels from the joint SAR team were still using water cannons to cool the vessel on Oct 21, which had been totally consumed by the fire and was still emitting smoke. Once the ship was declared safe, a search and inspection was to be conducted to support the investigation into the cause of the fire by the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) and the police. The Ministry of Transportation supported the investigation to determine follow-up actions within its authority. Deputy Chairman of Commission V of the House of Representatives, Syaiful Huda, highlighted the ship's seaworthiness certification issued by the Indonesian Classification Bureau (BKI).
