Canal ferry assisted grounded British barge
The British flagged inland vessem 'Northern King', with two people on board, suffered an engine failure while transiting eastbound on the Kuel Canal on July 12, 2026. The 'Kolberg' was called to respond and provide assistance after the 25-meter-long vessel drifted onto the canal embankment. The 'Northern King' eventually managed to reach the first mooring piles at the Groß Nordsee switch with the assistance if the ferry crew and tied up on the south side of the waterway. The 'Kolberg' subsequently brought a water police team on board. The ferry’s deployment concluded after just under two hours, following an inspection of the vargr by the policeofficers. The Landwehr ferry crossing was out of service during this time. The engine failure was likely caused by the heat; the air-cooled diesel engine overheated due to high temperatures shortly before reaching Groß Nordsee. After a cooling-off period, the 'Northern King' was able to move at slow speed to the Flemhuder Lake and moor there. From there, it was scheduled to proceed to Rendsburg for repairs. Built in 1928, the vessel formerly belonged to the Victor Waddington shipping company's fleet and transported cargo on English rivers. Most recently, it had been used as a residential vessel and houseboat in London's East India Docks. It was making its way from there to the Baltic Sea.
