Ferry towed to breakers after repair of engine damage did not take place
The 'Don Cándido', formerly the 'Lady Su' and 'Bahía de Málaga', has been beached for scrapping in Aliaga, where it arrived on Sep 28th, towed by the tug 'Marinsal III' (MMSI: 271010441). The ferry had been moored in Yalova since September 2020. The first of the two vessels built at the Santander Shipyards for ISNASA was the 'Bahía de Málaga', being launched on Sep 8, 1979, and starting sea trials on March 3, 1980. After being delivered, it inaugurated its service on the Algeciras-Tangier route and served the route for 14 years, until 1994 when Flebasa chartered it to open a new line between Vilanova i Geltrú and Sant Antoni (Ibiza). In 1998, it joined the fleet of the newly created Balearia. and in the summer of 1999 it served the Palma-Ibiza-Denia route. A year later, in the summer of 2000, it was transferred to the Valencia-Palma route, and in 2001 it was registered to Eurolíneas Marítimas SAL. From July 2002, it sailed on the Alcudia-Mahón route. It then moved to the Denia route, where on Oct 10, 2004, it ran aground at the entrance to the port. Three days later, after the fuel tanks were emptied, it was refloated and entered the shipyard for the necessary repairs. In March 2006, it was sold to the Portuguese company Transmacor, based in Horta (Azores), with delivery scheduled for the following May. The ship sailed to the Viana do Castelo shipyard for a preliminary dry-dock inspection, which apparently did not meet the buyer's approval, who had planned to rename it 'Cruzeiro dos Açores, and so the deal was cancelled. In October, it returned to the Balearic Islands, and in April 2004, it began operating on the Denia-San Antoni route. This would be its last stint with Balearia, as in October 2009 it was sold to the Turkish company Kada Denizcilik Tourism, based in Istanbul, and renamed 'Med Dream'. From November, it operated on the Istanbul-Famagusta-Haifa route. Resold in 2014 to Akgunler Osletmeleri Sti. Ltd., it was then registered in Sierra Leone under the new name 'Lady Su'. In May 2019, it reappeared in the port of Seville, renamed 'Don Cándido'. Suffering from propulsion problems, it remained there until September 2020, undergoing a refurbishment at the Astilleros del Guadalquivir shipyard for part of that time. Registered in St. Kitts & Nevis, a few days after its departure it went adrift due to engine problems, and the Dutch-flagged tug 'Eems Wrestler' (IMO: 8843549) came to assist and took it to the port of Tuzla to carry out repairs, without this ever taking place.
