River cruise ship damaged engines in grounding incident

Wed Sep 24 10:49:10 CEST 2025 Timsen

On Sep 16, 2025, the 'Lafayette', enroute from Beinheim to Strasbourg, struck the stones on the Rhine shore near Rüdesheim, at Rhine kilometer 525.4, at approximately 8:15 p.m., while it attempted to turn around. This caused significant damage to the stern of the cabin cruiser. A damage to the propulsion system rendered the boat unmaneuverable and forced it to anchor in the middle of the Rhine shortly afterwards. There were brief disruptions to shipping traffic, until another vessel towed the passenger ship t to the left bank near Bingen that night. For safety reasons, the 71 passengers were asked to leave their cabins. The Waterways and Shipping Authority issued asailing ban while the damage was investigated. On Sep 17 the damaged vessel was towed to the Braun shipyard in Speyer for permanent repairs. it had turned out that two of the three propulsion engines were damaged and could not be repaired on-site. The passengers were transported to Strasbourg by bus.
