Seven migrants dead on makeshift boat, 50 more rescued
Seven migrants were found dead on Aug 17 aboard a makeshift boat during a rescue operation off the coast of Libya. At least 50 migrants, two of them in critical condition, were rescued. Around 6:00 a.m. the 'Life Support' spotted a two-deck wooden boat in distress in the Libyan SAR zone. Upon arrival, rescuers discovered nine people lying on the deck. Seven of them were already dead when the rescuers arrived. They were brought aboard by other survivors who had pulled them from the hold where they had spent the entire journey. There was nothing more that could be done for seven of them; two were in critical condition, victims of asphyxiation. An emergency medical evacuation was requested for these two migrants. The rescue operation was overseen by a Libyan patrol boat. The NGO ship contacted them to inform them that the rescue operation was already underway, and the Libyan vessel remained on site to supervise the operation. The humanitarian vessel was heading towards Bari, the port designated by the Italian authorities, with 50 migrants on board. The migrants—45 men and five women, including 29 unaccompanied minors—were from Egypt and Somalia. According to the survivors, their boat had departed from the coast of Zuwara, Libya, on Aug16.
NGO ship rescued 71 migrants in Libyan SAR zone
The' Life Support', operated by the NGO Emergency, docked in La Spezia on the morning of April 12 with 71 migrants on board, rescued four days earlier from an overcrowded inflatable boat in the Libyan SAR zone. The Italian authorities have designated the Ligurian city, located 640 nautical miles away, as a "safe port," thus imposing three additional days of sailing on the exhausted survivors, including 17 unaccompanied minors. NGOs accuse the government of deliberately allocating distant ports to discourage private rescue vessels from remaining in the central Mediterranean.
