Allision on Albert Canal

On the morning of Aug 11, 2026, the 'Lorca', enroute from Antwerp to Ghent, allegedly was in allision with the moored pleasure yacht 'Volupia' from Diksmuide, while transiting the Albert Canal near the Hoogmolen dike in Schoten, Antwerp. The 'Lorca' lost its rudder and became unmanageable as a result. It then drifted to the side. There, it struck the moored pleasure craft and pushed it under another moored inland vessel. However, several witnesses pointed out that the inland vessel had been moored there for several days - accoding to data since Aug 6 - and that it therefore could not have hit the pleasure boat during a maneuver. According to these witnesses, who were inland skippers themselves, the pleasure boat broke loose during the night and allided with the stern of the ship. The Federal Police has not yet responded to this version of events, but stated that the information has been included in the ongoing investigation into the circumstances of the accident. According to initial reports, there was no one on board the yacht, which partially sank. There were no casualties, but the 'Volupia' sustained heavy damage. Consultations with the maritime police commenced, regarding how the heavily listing boat should be salvaged. The damage to the 'Lorca' was being investigated too. Shipping traffic was temporarily halted as a result, but could later pass again at a moderate speed.
