Yacht broke down off Guernsey
On Jan 7, 2026, the Coastguard and a lifeboat went to the aid of the 'Mad Science' after it suffered a power failure en route from Le Havre, and later lost all contact. Guernsey Portsreceived a distress call at 04:40 BST from the yacht, which was 11 nautical miles south of the island, before it lost communication with the yacht at 05:40 a.m. Lifeboat crews were able to locate the vessel at 07:08 a.m. from its reported position and escorted it along with three crew members to St. Peter Port Harbour. The yacht, which was enroute to Brest, initially made contact with the CROSS Jobourg. The coordination of the response was then transferred to Guernsey Ports who made direct communication and established the number of people aboard and the location. The Jersey Coastguard collaborated, and the Channel Islands Air Search was put on standby.
