Water ingress in engine room
On Jan 17, 2026, the 'Maks', enroute from Hannover to Vahlsdorf, suffered water ingress in the engine room on the Mittelland Canal at kilometer 284 near Calvörde, where the ship was berthed. Emergency services respondied to bring the situation under control. The Calvörde, Haldensleben, and Eimersleben volunteer fire departments, along with the water police, were mobilised at 3:23 p.m. along with Waterways and Shipping Authority, the Stork Company, the Umweltdienst GmbH and the divers of the Taucherbetrieb Helgoland. They pumped approximately 11.5 cubic meters of water from the engine room. Only then the hole in the hull, roughly three to four centimeters in diameter was located. Accessing the leak proved difficult, as it was located directly beneath one of the propulsion engines. The fire department temporarily sealed the leak with a wedge, preventing further water ingress. During the night, divers from a specialized company permanently sealed the leak. The ship remained stationary at the port as of Jan 19. An ice floe was thought to have caused the damage. The incicent was under investigation.
