Bulk carrier still moored off Dung Quat anchorage
After the 'Merchant Mariner' made contact with a submerged rock or reef approximately 15 nautical miles from the Dung Quat anchorage, carrying approximately 174,614 tonnes of iron ore for delivery to Hoa Phat Dung Quat Steel Joint Stock Company, no water has been reported in the cargo holds as of Sep 24, and all 24 crew members are reported safe. The vessel remained anchored off Dung Quat, while the Vietnamese authorities have required the vessel’s condition, hull integrity and stability to be assessed and a suitable salvage and cargo discharge plan to be prepared before unloading can proceed. The owners have appointed a salvage contractor to assess the vessel and prepare the salvage plan. Tug assistance has been maintained in the vicinity of the vessel. Cargo interests may be required to deal with salvage, General Average and related security issues arising from the casualty.
Ore carrier breached in grounding incident
On Sep 18, 2026, at 11.30 a.m. the 'Merchant Mariner', with 24 crew members on board, comprising of eight Greeks and 16 Filipinos, and carrying 174.614 tons of BRBF iron ore en route from Teluk Rubiah Port to Dung Quat, ran onto a reef in the waters of Quang Ngai Port, in the Dung Quat area, causing water ingress in the ballast tanks 4, 5, and 6 on the port side. The ship was moored about 15 nautical miles from the Dung Quat anchorage in pos. 15° 29' N 108° 44' E with a significant list to port side. To ensure safety, the Quang Ngai Port Authority instructed the Greek captain Chondros Charilaos to immediately assess the extent of the incident's impact on the hull structure, watertight integrity, stability, draft, and overall safety of the vessel. At the same time, directives were issued to continue measuring and monitoring water levels in the compartments and to conduct an inspection of the ship's hull. The authority ordered to close fuel tank valves and take necessary measures to prevent environmental pollution. Shipowners and captain were developing contingency plans in case the vessel's draft increased further and implementing measures to manage water ingress and proactively respond to potential situations. The authorities in Quang Ngai were closely monitoring the situation, managing the next steps and coordinating to develop a plan for offloading the vessel's cargo. On Sep 20 the Dung Quat Port Border Guard Station (Quang Ngai Provincial Border Guard) announced that it was coordinating with relevant authorities to monitor and handle the incident. The border guard station at Dung Quat Port has completed entry formalities for the vessel and its crew and has authorised the shipowner, insurers, surveyors, and tugs to approach and assist in managing the incident. On Sep 20, the tug 'An Binh 01' (IMO: 1123251) and the 'Vinh 91364' (MMSI: 574221461) were on scene.
