Divers finally found leak

Mon Jan 19 12:42:11 CET 2026 Timsen

On Jan 15, divers have located and temporarily plugged a leak in the hull of the 'Johanna'. An expert now had to decide how to proceed. The ship was loaded with asphalt. It was still unclear whether it can continue its journey or will have to be unloaded. The reasons why the ship sprang aleak on the Main-Danube Canal enroute from Nuremberg to Bamberg were still unclear. As a precaution, the fire department had deployed an oil boom and sent divers to search for the leak, but they were initially unable to locate it. On Jan 16, the barge was found to be seaworthy again and handed back to the owner. It remained stationary in Fürth as of Jan 19. https://www.antenne.de/nachrichten/bayern/havariertes-frachtschiff-in-fuerth-wieder-fahrbereit

Water ingress in Fürth

Thu Jan 15 11:46:17 CET 2026 Timsen

In the port of Fürth, the 'Johanna', enroute from Nuremberg to Bamberg, suffered a water ingress on the evening of Jan 14, 2026. A bulkhead was sealed, allowing only the forward section of the ship to flood, so that there was currently no risk of the ship sinking. A large contingent of emergency personnel was on site to gather more information about the leak. They were assessing whether it can be temporarily repaired. If not, the ship would have to remain at the berth for the time being. The German Life Saving Association (DLRG) and the water rescue service were on scene with boats, and fire department divers have also entered the water to investigate the cause. Although no hazardous materials were released, an oil boom was deployed around the ship as a precaution. No one was injured. Since the crew did not speak German, the circumstances surrounding the leak could not be determined initially. One possible cause was s damage from drifting ice floes. However, this has not yet been confirmed. The Main-Danube Canal has been temporarily closed to shipping. Divers underway to locate leak

Thu Jan 15 11:45:54 CET 2026 Timsen

The 'Johanna', which suffered hull damage while transiting the Main-Danube Canal, loaded with asphalt near Fürth, will have to be unloaded in the port. The crew had noticed water entering the hold, and the ship was taken to the port of Fürth. Divers of the alerted fire department searched the hull from the outside on the evening of Jan 14, but could not pinpoint the exact location of the leak. The fire department also deployed an oil boom. The Main-Danube Canal was temporarily closed to shipping but has since been reopened. The original plan was to unload the 1,806-ton ship. However, these plans have now been abandoned. Divers will search for the leak once again. An expert will also inspect the damage. They are not expected to begin their work until the midday hours of Jan 15. The water police have also launched an investigation.
