Passengers hacked publick address system and made hoax announcements

Thu Aug 06 12:04:41 CEST 2026 Timsen

While the 'MSC Divina' was en route from Marmaris to Naples on July 30, 2026, the cruise ship had its public address system hacked by six Italian men: "The captain has lost control of the ship", the passengers heard. Several announcements of this kind were broadcast before 6:30 a.m., sowing disbelief and concern among some of the passengers and crew. In fact, the captain was firmly in control. The message broadcast over the loudspeakers was actually the work of six passengers sharing two cabins. Upon the arrival in Naples, they were detained and handed over to the authorities and prosecuted for unauthorised access to a computer system, triggering an alarm, and disturbing public safety. The indictment also included "conspiracy to break the law." They had exploited a security vulnerability in the ship's network to broadcast hoax announcements. However, the effect was limited: the alarm only sounded on two of the ship's 18 decks, in the common areas, which were sparsely populated at that early hour.

The person was airlifted along with the partner and transported to the Tenerife North airport for further transfer to a hospital.

Medevac in Algeciras

Tue Jun 02 12:49:06 CEST 2020 Timsen

The 'MSC Divina' on June 1, 2020, moored at anchorage D of the port of Algeciras, in waters near the Ensenada de Getares, to disembark a sick crew member and, in turn, carry out tasks of fuel supply. The cruiseship remained only a few hours in this area, since the fast and effective work of the authorities allowed the sick crew member to be treated at the Quirón de Los Barrios Hospital, after which he returned on board. Health personnel, the Port Authority and the Corps of the National Police under the supervision and coordination of the Maritime Captaincy of the port of Algeciras carried out the medevac by Salvamento Marítimo as well as his his subsequent return to the cruise ship.
