Tug towed 110 year old steamships to scrapyard in Ghent
On November 14, the 'Multratug 5' jointly with the tug 'Karin' (MMSI: 244720395) arrived in Ghent, towing the hullks of the former passenger vessels 'Nederlander' and 'Flandria 20', where both ships were deilvered at the Galloo Scrapyard. On Nov 11, the tug 'Statum' and the multicat 'Vigilant' had pulled the ship out of the port of Lemmer, where they had been moored for years. The historic steamships 'Flandria 20' and 'Nederlander', formerly the 'C. Bosman' and 'R. van Hasselt', were both built in 1915 as steam ferries for use between Enkhuizen and Stavoren. The 'C. Bosman' was later converted into a training ship under the name 'Nederlander'. In 1992, the ship came into the possession of a foundation that intended to restore and preserve it. This restoration was expected to take several years. The sister ship 'R. van Hasselt' also passed into the foundation's possession. The restoration never really got underway. Ultimately, both ships were sold to the Veka shipyard in Lemmer. The 'Stantum' and 'Vigilant' transported the ships from Lemmer to Hansweert. Subsequently, the 'Multratug 5' and 'Karin' took over the transport to their final destination port.
