Report on grounding in December 2024

Wed Feb 04 10:40:50 CET 2026 Timsen

The 'Felya' ran aground on Kajeletan Beach, Cegog Hamlet, Rancapinang Village, Cimanggu District, Pandeglang Regency, due to a damage to its propeller seal on Dec 4, 2024, enroute from Dumai to PT Cemindo Gemilang, Bayah, Lebak Regency. The incident began on Dec 1, when the vessel was anchoring in the waters of Ujung Kulon at a depth of around 30 metres, waiting for a tug to tow it to Merak Port for repairs to the leaking propeller shaft. During this time, strong west winds of 35–40 knots caused the vessel to experience heavy pitching. At around 07:00 p.m. WIB, the master noticed the vessel was drifting, based on radar and GPS observations. The crew immediately deployed the starboard anchor in an attempt to stop the drift. On Dec 4, the weather conditions worsened further, with strong west winds and waves reaching 3–4 metres. The vessel dragged anchor and finally ran aground in the Ujung Kulon area. The vessel was then left unattended due to persistent bad weather and the company’s inability to cover salvage costs. The starboard side, facing directly towards the open sea, suffered major hull damage, allowing water to flood the cargo holds and engine room. There was no information on whether the vessel has since been salvaged or if it remained at the site.
