Trawler caught while illegal fishing of sharks

Tue Jun 09 12:28:52 CEST 2026 Timsen

The environmental organisation Greenpeace has filed a complaint against the "Naboeiro" for allegedly catching bigeye thresher sharks, (Alopias superciliosus), a species extremely vulnerable to overexploitation, whose targeted fishing is prohibited by law. The incident occurred off the west coast of Africa, where the Canary and Guinea currents converge within a zone whose fishing activity is regulated by the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT). Greenpeace caught the vessel in the act of this illegal practice and released images as evidence. when a vessel accidentally catches a specimen of this species, it is obligated to comply with a series of requirements established by both European and Spanish regulations, requirements which, according to the images, were ignored. Greenpeace asserted that the sharks were subsequently butchered and some parts thrown back into the sea. The images showed bodies without fins, which could indicate a violation of European regulations that expressly prohibit cutting off shark fins on board. The organisation also points out that if these catches were not recorded in the vessel's official fishing logbook, it would constitute another breach of European fisheries legislation. After analysing the images obtained during its investigation, Greenpeace has formally requested the General Secretariat of Fisheries to study the case and consider opening an investigation. The organisation released this report on June 8, 2026, to coincide with the World Oceans Day.
