Roro ferry struck by drones off Novorossiysk towed to Samsun

Mon Aug 10 13:40:58 CEST 2026 Timsen

The 'Nadezhda', enroute from Samsun to Novorossyisk, was struck by several drones, while sailing about 30 nautical miles off the port of destination on Aug 3, 2026, at about 4:30 p.m. A fire broke out aboard the ship following the attack, which damaged the living quarters and the bow, and spread over several decks of the accomodation block and the bridge. Attempts of the crew to put out the blaze failed. The ship’s captain, Yalcin Sahin, alleged that Ukraine carried out the attack - a claim which could not be independently verified - and that six or seven drones were used. All 22 crew members - among them 13 Turkish nationals - were accounted for. The presence of drones in the area made it difficult for Russian naval vessels to approach the 'Nadezhda' and provide assistance. Finally, all crew members were evacuated by the Directorate General of Maritime Affairs, which coordinated with the MRCC in Novorossiysk. They were taken to the port; three of them had suffered serious injuries. Further rescue work around the ship had been curtailed because of the continuing threat of drone attacks. The 'Nadezhda' was being used to transport fruits and vegetables between Turkey and Russia and was transmitting a message on its AIS of “Turk Crew Turk Owner.” The vessel had been initially left drifting. Later, the fire was extinguished with the assistance of a fire boat. The empty trailers carried aboard the ferry were transferred to another vessel off Novorossiysk. After the transfer was completed, the 'Nadezhda' departed on the night of Aug 7 and reached waters off Samsun on Aug 8. The vessel was then guided into the port with the assistance of tugs under the supervision of teams from the Samsun Provincial Police Department’s Maritime Port Branch. The attack was the latest in a series of incidents involving Turkish-owned or Turkish-operated commercial vessels in the Black Sea since the Russian war began. The former “Cala Fustan,” then owned by Naviera Mallorquina, sailed under the Spanish flag between 1990 and 2000. Resold that year to Boluda Internacional and renamed “Lucía B,” it was resold to third parties in October 2010 and has since spent most of its time in the Eastern Mediterranean and Black Sea. It originally belonged to a series of eight roro vessels built in Denmark for the Danish company K/S Mercandia (Per Henriksen) and entered service in December 1978, christened “Mercandian Importer II.” The vessels “Cala Teram,” renamed “Cala Salada,” and “Lorena B” after its sale to Boluda Internacional, and “Hatay,” formerly “Mercandian Carrier II,” acquired by Baleària in 2025, also belonged to the same series. Flag of embargo breaker suspended

Mon Aug 03 22:40:47 CEST 2026 Timsen

The Moldovan flag of the "Amazon", which was pinpointed in carrying military equipment to Tripoli from Turkey, such as armoured vehicles, was suspended, after the Moldova Maritime Authorities received information on the transportation in violation of the international sanctions imposed on arms trade with war-torn Libya. The ship had carried more than a dozen BMC Kirpi II mine-resistant ambush-protected (MRAP) vehicles to Tripoli port on May 18. She left Tripoli on May 20 and returned to Samsun on May 27. As of May 29, she was still showing the Moldovan flag.

Technical failure in Samsun

Wed Aug 14 10:14:01 CEST 2019 Timsen

The "Amazon" suffered a technical failure in the engine room's fire-fighting system at Samsun on Aug 9, 2019. Repairs were subsequently carried out by the crew, together with shore-based support. Later, the port master surveyor panel attended the vessel and verified the final status of repairs and granted departure permission. The "Amazon" sailed from Samsun on Aug 10, bound for Tuapse, where it arrived on Aug 12 at 7.15 a.m.
